Awareness – Sensitization

Campaigns

Plastic bag-free Alonissos

The “Plastic bag-free Alonissos” campaign was implemented on Alonissos during 2015–2016 and placed particular emphasis on raising awareness among the local community about reducing plastic bag use.

The programme included environmental education for all students on the island, numerous participatory activities such as consultations, street events, beach clean-ups, as well as the distribution of cloth, reusable bags. This campaign opened the discussion on restricting single-use plastics in Greece and inspired the successful implementation of similar initiatives throughout the country.

ASAP (Active Skiathos Against Plastic bag)

The “Plastic bag-free Alonissos” campaign was extended to another island in the Sporades archipelago, Skiathos. ASAP drew on the experience, methodologies and lessons learned from the original campaign and adopted the idea of drastically reducing plastic bag use.

Coastal Clean-ups

Recognising the educational value of coastal and marine clean-ups, as well as their contribution to relieving the oceans of tonnes of waste, Aenaos Thalassa has organised countless clean-ups: coastal and underwater (with the assistance of diving centres), on busy beaches as well as on remote islets of the NMPANS, involving both students and citizens of all ages. All clean-ups are accompanied by recording of the collected waste and sorting it by material type.

Film Screenings

Harnessing the power of the seventh art to raise awareness and inspire action, Aenaos Thalassa, in collaboration with Anemon Productions and Cineoc, has over the past three years organised screenings in the Sporades of films focusing on environmental themes as well as critical social issues, including Mediterranean: Life Under Siege, Silent Fish, Dolphin Man, When Tomatoes Met Wagner, and Aphrodite of Milos.
