The biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea is threatened by various factors, making it extremely important to take measures to protect and preserve marine natural resources. Habitat destruction, marine litter, oil pollution, overfishing, the deliberate killing of endangered marine mammals, and the use of inappropriate fishing equipment are serious threats to marine ecosystems.
In this context, Aenaos Thalassa, from the early stages of its activity, placed particular emphasis on the conservation of marine resources and supported projects against habitat destruction, overfishing and other illegal human activities, as well as research activities aimed at better understanding the biology, ecology and behaviour of rare species.
Guarding of the Alonnisos National Park
Since 2018, and in collaboration with MOm and the Thalassa Foundation, Aenaos Thalassa has been supporting a modern patrol programme that assists the Coast Guard and the Management Unit in monitoring the marine area to detect illegal activities (mainly illegal fishing), by providing the vessels, crew and equipment for conducting regular patrols in the area of the NMPANS on-site, while simultaneously recording data on marine megafauna.
Furthermore, by consistently investing in innovation and new technologies, it has funded studies to identify the best tools and surveillance systems for the remote monitoring of the NMPANS.
